A view of the Grand Canyon from Hopi Point on the South Rim.
Leaving the glitz of Las Vegas behind, we drove into the sunrise
Lured by the black outline of the Nevada hills, still in night
Enjoying the romance of that moment,
Both anticipating a day of delight.
Many hours later, we stepped on the Arizona snow
Glistening and melting gently in the morning sun
And walked through pinyon pines and juniper trees
Towards a sight that would truly stun.
Stretching before us in breathtaking glory, there it was
— The Grand Canyon. Tourists stood humbly gazing in awe,
Subdued in silence broken only by camera clicks,
Absorbing a wonder that makes spirits soar
— Millions of years of beauty layered together
In varied hues too dazzling to describe
Of stone eroded over time in a pure spectacle of nature,
The grandeur of which I will forever imbibe.
It was a dream come true to see this scene of rocks, shadow and light
Almost too vast to take in, 1.6 kilometres high,
Carved by the Colorado River
With a majesty that made me cry.
A path leading down from the rim gave different views
And brought a huge sense of peace.
Treading that trail amid such immensity
Gave a real, temporary release
From the worries and questions of life, but Lady Gaga is right
— What clashes cannot rhyme.
We did try but it wasn’t love,
At least not this time.
The Arizona sky certainly did burn in his eyes
So brightly that it blinded me to the truth they concealed,
A cowardice and coldness
That would soon cause reality to be revealed
And end this transitory feeling of togetherness.
However, on this trip neither of us were losing
And today’s unprecedented, uplifting excursion
Was no roller-coaster, just companionable cruising.
Beautifully written Armorel, as always!
